Superman Returns

Fridays are Dad's bachelor's nite out. Fortunately, I was saved from a lonely evening at home by XC who watched Superman Returns with me. (Thanks to the kind soul)

Movie Review

A groovy, hunky, Superman (Brandon Routh, 10/10 stars) returns to earth after a 5 yr search for Krypton proves futile. He's welcomed back by some heart-breaking news: His beloved Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth, hotter than Katong Laksa) has a son and is about to be married to a certain Richard (also rather handsome, 8/10 stars).

On a nondescript ship not too far away, the sinister Lex Luther (Kevin Spacey) is plotting to destroy the world with his newfound knowledge -the magical crystals he nicked off Superman's little island can:
1. Grow land when mixed with water (like Seamonkeys)
2. Inherit the properties of its neighbouring materials

The plan: to grow a continent made of Kryptonite which would displace the Americas. On this land, Superman would be powerless (possibly due to an anaphylactic reaction to Kryptonite).

Things to look out for:

1.The one and only romantic scene between Superman and Lois occurs quite early in the movie when he takes her for a spin at night (in the air of course).

2.While a prisoner on his ship, Lois incurs Luther's wrath and he tries to kill her. Her son, Jason, saves her by sliding a grand piano across the hall, killing one of Luther's men.

3.The scene where Superman is in the ER and is eventually pronounced dead.

Rating time:
Acting:
Superman (8/10)
In my opinion, the role of Superman hardly involves any acting. The job requirement probably reads: Blessed in the aesthetics department, full stop.

Lois Lane (9/10)
Kate Bosworth pulled it off decently. However, in many scenes, she came across as a stressed up housewife, rather than as the high-flying, Pulitzer-Prize awardee.

Lex Luther (9.9/10)
The 0.1 pt was taken off because only Dr. House deserves it. Other than that, he was the perfect villian.

Script: 8.5/10
1 pt deducted for Superman's bland dialogue. When Lois asked him if she would see him around, he replied, "I'm always around. Goodnight Lois." This was repeated twice. I half wished him to sound like Dr. House, but then it wouldn't be romantic right? The other 0.5 pt was deducted because I didn't feel the movie deserved it.

Overall Rating: 8.85/10
